WHAT ARE THEY USED FOR?

SPONTANEOUS

NARRATIVE CUES

Attribute Dice provide a fun method of creating narrative cues that will enhance your role-playing experience in all editions of D&D, Pathfinder and Starfinder (as well as other popular TTRPGs ). Numeric dice by themselves simply provide pass/fail outcome resolution, with varying degrees of success and failure. We feel the most compelling reason to incorporate Attribute Dice into your gaming sessions is the added benefit of spontaneous narrative cues without impacting core system rules.

  • Adding an Attribute Die to a standard attack for narrative use:
While a character is attacking with its weapon, add an attribute die alongside the normal d20 attack roll. If the attack is successful and is coupled with a charisma attribute die outcome, you could say the character did it with flair impressing any NPC onlookers and players in the party. On the flip side, if the attack fails, then one might add that it was quite an embarrassing moment for the character, causing them to look rather foolish to any spectators.
  • Adding an Attribute Die to a standard skill check for narrative use:
Jibikie is trying to bust through a locked door but their skill check fails. Integrate the rolled Attribute Die value to help narrate why they failed. If the Attribute Die roll result is a DEX, then they might have tripped over their own feet as they charged towards the door.

INSPIRE COLLABORATIVE STORYTELLING

  • Players will definitely enjoy the creative ways their GM will go about implementing these dice. You will find normally quiet players leaning over the table to see what the Attribute Dice result is and coming up with their own narrative as to why they succeeded or failed!
  • GMs will enjoy the free-flowing and ever-changing narrative results that can inspire whole new directions for their campaign. They will also enjoy the player driven narrative discussions that will free the GM up a bit to think about what's coming next.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO WITH THEM?

ROLL ATTRIBUTE DICE TO:

  • Play Mini Games
Bottoms up! (a drinking contest) - Players look at their Constitution Modifiers and roll that many Attribute Dice +1. Whoever doesn't roll a Constitution that round, passes out. This continues until only 1 character is left or everyone passes out.
  • Decide Randomized Effects
Poison effects – Roll 1 or all Attribute Dice when a character is poisoned to determine random effects. For example, a character is minus 3 to all rolled attributes until they are cured or recover.
  • Randomize Magical Item Buffs
Develop magical items with buffs which change each time they are used.
  • Randomize NPCs’ Stats
Use Attribute Dice to randomly select NPCs' top attributes.
  • Determine Their Type
This NPC is attracted to characters with high... roll an Attribute Die
  • Decide Who Dies First
This creature is going to attack the character with the highest... roll an Attribute Die
  • These are just a handful of ideas
What other ways could you use them in?

THE AGON FAIR

This setting device can be plugged into virtually any fantasy campaign that uses the SDCIWC system to create a bit of atmosphere and novelty for the players. Whether the party is in a city or the smaller outskirts of a kingdom. A seasonal festival is being held in honor of the god Agon – Agon can be substituted to your worlds own pantheon – Agon is the roman god of “spirit of contest” so naturally the Agon festival is full of spirited contests. Each contest should be hosted by its own NPC that is fueled with a good bit of banter towards the contestants.
